A single mother of a child with special needs came to us during one of the most difficult times in her life. As a domestic violence survivor with limited English proficiency, she had received a 3-Day Notice to Pay Rent and was physically assaulted by her husband when she asked about it. After securing a restraining order, she came to our office seeking help. BASTA Universal stepped in to help her file a Prejudgment Claim to Right of Possession, protecting her legal rights and giving her time to stabilize. Tragically, during this process, her abuser became homeless and later passed away. Meanwhile, we filed a habitability complaint with the City of Los Angeles, which led to an inspection and forced the landlord to make long-overdue repairs she had previously refused. Today, the tenant is working with a social worker to secure a safer and more affordable home for herself and her son. She is grateful she no longer had to face this alone.
